Jiraiya manages to kill one of the Pains only to realise he's fought him before and gave him a scar on his forehead. Jiraiya then tells the frogs to go back but Pa refuses. Ma goes alone so Jiraiya and Pa go back out to fight the Pains. During the fight, Jiraiya gets stabbed and nearly dies but as he is passing out he remembers Minato and how he is Naruto's godfather. Suddenly, he realizes that the Pains are all people he has met/fought before. He then knows who Pain really is but is attacked and stabbed by all five at once. Jiraiya nearly dies yet as he is passing out he remembers how Naruto never gives up and tries to sit up. The Pains realise he is not dead and go back to finish him off but before they do Jiraiya manages to write a coded message onto Pa and Pa is able to escape. Finally, Jiraiya succumbs to his injuries, falling into the water. His last thoughts are about his next book and decides to name it The Life Of Naruto Uzumaki.
